At Shafeeq Ali’s residence in Tirur, Malappuram, the challenge was not simply to build another car porch.
The architecturally designed home already had a small attached car porch, but the family needed considerably more covered parking. At the same time, direct sun and rain were affecting the sit-out and steps, reducing how comfortably the area could be used.
Status Roofing designed a single pillar tensile car porch together with an overlapping tensile sunshade for the sit-out.
The result is a larger, more open covered area that can accommodate approximately two to three vehicles depending on parking arrangement, while keeping the original architecture of the residence visually prominent.

The Requirement: More Parking Without Hiding the House
Shafeeq Ali’s home was already completed with a carefully planned architectural exterior and landscaping.
There was also an existing attached car porch.
The issue was its size.
The family required a larger protected parking area, but simply adding a conventional roof in front of the residence could have changed the visual character of the elevation.
That concern was important to the customer from the beginning.
As Shafeeq Ali explained during the project interview:
നമുക്ക് ഈ വീടിന്റെ ഒരു ഡിസൈനിനെ ബാധിക്കാതെ ചെയ്യണം.
The intention was clear: increase the usable covered area without making the new car porch look disconnected from, or overpower, the existing house.
Two Problems, One Integrated Roofing Concept
This Tirur project had two separate requirements:
1. Additional covered parking
The small existing car porch did not provide the amount of covered parking the family wanted.
A larger tensile car porch was therefore planned in front of the residence.
2. Rain and direct sunlight at the sit-out
During rainfall, water could reach the sit-out and steps.
Direct sunlight also made the sit-out uncomfortable during parts of the day.
Instead of designing an unrelated shade for the sit-out, Status Roofing proposed integrating it visually with the new car porch.
The single pillar car porch and sit-out sunshade were designed to overlap, allowing the two structures to work together as one larger covered zone.
Why Shafeeq Ali Chose a Single Pillar Car Porch
The final model was not selected only from a catalogue.
Photographs of the completed residence were shared with the Status Roofing team, and a 3D visualisation was prepared to show how the proposed roofing would sit against the house.
Shafeeq Ali then selected the single pillar model.
His reasons were straightforward: he preferred its appearance and the openness it created around the parking area.
A single supporting pillar allows much of the surrounding floor area to remain free from additional vertical obstructions. For this project, that made vehicle movement easier while helping the front elevation remain visually open.
It was an architectural decision as much as a parking decision.
What Changed After the Tensile Roofing Was Installed?
More usable parking
By combining the new car porch with the adjoining sunshade area, the project created enough covered space to park approximately two to three vehicles, depending on how they are positioned.
The existing small attached car porch remains part of the house; the tensile structure substantially expands the useful covered area around it.
A more comfortable sit-out
Before the sunshade was added, both rain and direct sunlight affected the sit-out.
During his feedback, Shafeeq Ali explained that the improvement was noticeable after completing the roofing. Family members who previously found the sit-out difficult to use during hotter conditions were able to spend more time there once the area was shaded.
The effect is particularly relevant because part of the exterior uses stone finishes that become noticeably warm under direct sunlight.
By shading the area rather than enclosing it, the tensile roof improved comfort while retaining the open character of the sit-out.
The Covered Area Has Another Use
The space underneath the roofing is not restricted to parking.
Shafeeq Ali pointed out another practical advantage during his customer interview.
When the vehicles are moved outside, he estimates that the combined covered space can provide seating for approximately 80–90 people for a small family function, depending on the seating arrangement.
That can reduce the need for a separate temporary pandal for certain functions at the residence.
The single-pillar configuration becomes particularly useful here because there are fewer structural obstructions within the usable floor area.
This is a project-specific benefit of the layout at this residence rather than a standard capacity claim for every single-pillar car porch.
Does a Tensile Car Porch Stop All Rain?
No open car porch can honestly be described as a completely enclosed rain-proof garage.
The tensile membrane provides overhead protection from rain, but the sides of this car porch remain open.
During relatively vertical rainfall, the covered area offers substantial protection. During strong wind-driven rain, however, water can enter from the sides and vehicles near an exposed edge may become wet.
Shafeeq Ali himself explained this clearly during his customer feedback.
For complete protection from rain coming from every direction, an enclosed garage system would be required.
For this project, the priority was different: provide substantial weather protection while maintaining an open, visually light car porch.
What About Tensile Roof Maintenance?
Tensile roofing is not a “zero-maintenance” product.
Like other exterior surfaces in Kerala, the membrane is exposed to rain, dust and organic deposits. Periodic cleaning is therefore important if the owner wants to retain its appearance over time.
This was another subject Shafeeq Ali discussed openly in his feedback.
He had previously visited another completed Status Roofing site and understood that even a premium exterior product needs maintenance to preserve its finish.
The appropriate cleaning frequency can vary according to the surroundings and the amount of environmental exposure at each property.
An Informed Customer With Tensile Roofing Experience
There is another reason this project is particularly interesting.
Shafeeq Ali works in Qatar in a field associated with tensile roofing.
He therefore approached the project with prior knowledge of tensile structures and was already familiar with many of the questions homeowners commonly ask — including maintenance, heat, appearance and suitability.
His decision to use a tensile structure for his own residence was not based only on seeing the finished appearance in photographs.
He could evaluate the concept from the perspective of someone already exposed professionally to the field.
That makes his project feedback especially valuable for homeowners researching whether tensile roofing is appropriate for a premium residence in Kerala.
From 3D Design to Project Coordination
The experience began before fabrication.
After images of the residence were shared, a 3D representation helped the customer evaluate how the proposed car porch would relate to the architecture of the house.
After choosing the single pillar design, communication continued through Status Roofing’s project coordination process.
In his final feedback, Shafeeq Ali specifically mentioned the responsiveness of the coordination and labour-management teams and the speed at which messages and project requirements were addressed.
His description of the overall experience was simple:
Really professional.
He also mentioned that a Status Roofing video was what originally introduced him to the company.
What This Tirur Project Demonstrates
Shafeeq Ali’s project shows why the right car porch design cannot be selected based only on the amount of shade required.
For an already completed architectural home, the design also has to consider:
- Where should the supporting structure sit?
- How much usable parking will remain?
- Will the new roof hide important parts of the elevation?
- Can another problem — such as an exposed sit-out — be solved at the same time?
- How will the roof look against the house before fabrication begins?
At this residence, the answer was a single pillar tensile car porch combined with an overlapping sit-out sunshade.
The solution increased covered parking, made the sit-out more usable and preserved the open visual character of the house.
Common Questions This Project Answers
Does the house have an existing car porch?
Yes. The residence already had a small attached car porch. The tensile car porch was added because the family required substantially more covered parking and usable outdoor space.
How many vehicles can be parked under this roofing?
At this particular residence, the completed covered area can accommodate approximately two to three vehicles, depending on vehicle size and parking arrangement.
Why was a single pillar design selected?
Shafeeq Ali preferred the appearance of the single pillar model and the greater openness it provided around the usable area. The final design was selected after reviewing a 3D visualisation prepared using photographs of the house.
Will vehicles remain completely dry during every type of rain?
Not necessarily. This is an open car porch. Overhead rain protection is provided, but wind-driven rain can enter through the open sides. A completely enclosed garage is required where protection from rain in every direction is essential.
Looking for Tensile Roofing in Tirur or Malappuram?
If you have already completed your home and are concerned about adding a car porch that could affect its elevation, the roofing should be designed around the building — not simply placed in front of it.
